On the weekend Slovakia remembered one of the saddest events from its history. On March 25 1941, in the first transport from Slovakia, from the northern Slovak town of Poprad 999 Jewish unmarried girls between the ages of 16 and 30 were taken in cattle wagons to Auschwitz concentration camp. Only six of them returned from death captivity. In total, more than 70 000 Slovak Jews perished during the Holocaust.
"And very similar patterns of behaviour that we could seen before the war, we have the opportunity to observe today. It is up to us to be able to detect these signs and to be able to oppose them," emphasised Michal Vanek, director of the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava.
